Este pudo haber sido el último pensamiento en su malévola mente, pero el 11 de septiembre del 2001, Osama Bin Laden movió a Estados Unidos de ser una tierra de defensores de los derechos humanos, a la trampa de convertirse en un imperio global: pronto afloraron personajes y lugares como Abu Gharib, la Bahía de Guantánamo, y un nuevo tipo de Americanos. Tal vez sin darse cuenta, Osama destruyó considerablemente mucho más del espíritu de Estados Unidos de América, que las dos enormes torres de la ciudad de Nueva York. Nos transformó de ser una nación que ayudaba a otras naciones en su búsqueda de libertad, a una nación que atenta en convertirse en un Imperio, término definido en el diccionario Webster's como “un grupo de naciones o estados bajo un único poder soberano”.

Uno podría decir que este deseo imperial ocurrió tan sólo para corregir los males del 11 de septiembre del 2001, incuestionablemente uno de los más terribles días en su historia. En este día, algo grande y noble dentro de los americanos comenzó a cambiar: eligieron no continuar como república sino como Imperio, incrementando la Guardia Nacional por todo el globo. Eligieron construir las mejores máquinas “aniquiladoras” que jamás hayan sido diseñadas por el intelecto humano. Personas de trasfondo Cristiano-Judío fueron engañadas por su nación, al haber obtenido, pensaban ellas, la posición de único super poder del mundo. En su movimiento hacia un nuevo militarismo colonialista, los estadounidenses olvidaron la advertencia del Rey David: “El Señor examina al justo, más al perverso y aquellos que aman la violencia, aborrece su alma.” (Salmos 11:5 NIV).

De todas formas, los americanos han cambiado a la luz de esta advertencia bíblica, transformándose en una nación que divide a familias al deportar a buenos trabajadores inmigrantes. Su provocación ha sido disfrazada bajo la fachada de seguridad, apresando con furia y arrestando a estos trabajadores quienes realizan los trabajos más peligrosos y por la paga más baja.

¿Será posible que este Nuevo Imperio Americano, basado en el miedo y en la avaricia por dentro y por fuera, tenga la fortaleza y la visión para cortar el nudo de Gordián que le está sofocando? ¿Será que no es posible un retorno a nuestra Constitución, y que tan sólo seamos una república responsable entre muchas otras culturas y naciones—por encima de todo, una nación fuerte y de sólida compasión, justicia, amabilidad, y misericordia? ¿Será posible que Estados Unidos vuelva a ser una república admirable, donde sus hombres y mujeres sean personas llanas de gentileza y bondad, y no los soberanos del mundo?

Muchos americanos, sin duda, son en verdad compasivos y nobles. Ahora es el momento para que estos americanos salgan a la superficie y tomen una postura clara, a fin de que seamos quienes solíamos ser- quienes en verdad somos – una república, gobernada por su pueblo, y no un Imperio Global Militarizado con características medievales.

Hoy en día Estados Unidos está eligiendo lo que hemos de ser. ¿Elegirá ser lo que nuestros fundadores buscaron, una Gran República? o ¿Continuaremos con este Imperio Globalizante, protegiendo a gobernantes títeres como ocurrió en Roma durante sus peores días? ¿Estamos los estadounidenses dispuestos a pagar el costo increíblemente alto de escuchar casi a diario el eco de los féretros que se cierran, con valerosos hombres y mujeres, por fin de vuelta a casa, pero para ser enterrados? ¿Será que esta nación puede financiar el extraordinario déficit que se incrementa cada día?

¿Será que Estados Unidos permitirá que Osama Bin Laden gane al dejar que nos transforme en el último de una larga lista de imperios caídos? o ¿Será que preferirá ganar, siendo compasivos y temerosos de Dios, como los hombres y mujeres que empezaron la república en Filadelfia y que se extendió por todas las colonias, con la única meta de ser una antorcha que luz para todo el Globo?

Could a republic become an empire?

It may have been the last thought in his malevolent mind, but, on September 11, 2001, Osama bin Laden moved America from a land of defenders of human rights into the trap of becoming a global empire: Soon there sprang up an Abu Gharib, a Guantánamo Bay, and a new kind of American. Perhaps without realizing it, Osama destroyed considerably more in America’s spirit than the two enormous towers of New York City. He moved us from helping free nations to attempting to become an empire, defined by Webster as “a group of nations or states under a single sovereign power.”

One may say that this latest imperial status was only to right the wrongs of September 11, 2001, unquestionably one of the most terrible days in its history. On this pivotal day, something grand and noble within Americans began to change: They chose not to continue as a republic but to become an empire, stretching their national guard across the globe. They chose to build the best “killing” machines ever designed by man’s highest intellect. Persons of a Judeo-Christian background were deceived by their nation’s having attained, they thought, the position of the world’s only super power. In their movement towards a new militaristic colonialism, Americans forgot the warning of King David: “The Lord examines the righteous, but the wicked and those who love violence his soul hates” (Psalm 11:5 NIV).

Yet, Americans have changed in the face of this biblical admonition to a nation that divides families by deporting hard-working immigrants. Its animosity abroad has now been twisted under the guise of security to anger and arrests of its workers who do the most dangerous and hardest jobs for the least pay.

Could this new American empire, based on fear and greed, have the strength and the vision to cut the Gordian knot that is choking it? Is it not possible for a return to its Constitution and just be one responsible republic among other great cultures and nations--above all, a strong nation in compassion, in justice, in kindness, and in mercy! Could America return to being a remarkable republic of men and women of gentleness and goodness, not the sovereigns of the whole world?

Most Americans, without a doubt, are truly compassionate and noble. It is high time for these Americans to rise to the surface, to stand, and to be what we were—and really are—a republic, governed by the people, and not a medieval, militaristic global empire.

America is choosing even today, what it will be. Will it be what our forefathers stood for, a great republic, or will it continue as a global empire, protecting puppet rulers like Rome during its worst days? Are Americans willing to pay the incredibly high cost of hearing almost daily, the echo of taps being played, as our courageous servicemen and women are brought home to be buried? Can this nation afford the extraordinary deficits that continue to grow with every passing day?

Will the United States let Osama bin Laden win by moving it to be the latest in a long list of fallen empires, or will it win by being compassionate and godly like the men and women of the republic that began in Philadelphia and spread throughout all the colonies, with the goal of being a lighthouse shinning for our entire globe?
