Amigo lector, si usted es estadounidense por nacimiento o por naturalización y es mayor de 18 años, regístrese para votar en las próximas elecciones generales.
La última fecha para registrarse es el viernes 10 de octubre, pero no espere hasta el último día venga a registrarse aquí:

Organizaciones sin fines de lucro y negocios con un alto sentido de su responsabilidad de educar a la comunidad sobre la importancia de registrarse y votar en las próximas elecciones.

Estados Unidos es un país de leyes. Todos los cambios se rigen por leyes presentadas y aprobadas por Representantes y Senadores en el Congreso y luego firmadas por el presidente. El voto latino es importante para elegir a los candidatos que apoyen nuestras causas y nuestras necesidades para que así nuestra comunidad pueda avanzar.

De acuerdo con el Pew Hispanic Center, los latinos somos el grupo minoritario de más rápido crecimiento en la nación. Con una población actual de 46 millones de personas. Este número nos convierte en el 15% del total de la población del país. Sin embargo, en las elecciones de este año representaremos solamente el 9% del electorado. Si la tendencia del pasado continúa, un 6.5% solamente saldrá a votar en noviembre. Es importante que todos colaboremos haciendo esfuerzos para aumentar el número de votantes latinos, para que nuestro grupo sea más fuerte y por lo tanto los candidatos nos escuchen más.

Requisitos para registrarse para votar:
• Ser ciudadano de Estados Unidos por nacimiento o por naturalización.
• Tener 18 años de edad o más para el 4 de noviembre del 2008 - Día de las Elecciones Generales.
• La ley Federal requiere que provea su número de licencia de conducir al momento de registrarse para votar. Si no tiene licencia puede proveer los últimos cuatro dígitos de su número de seguro social.
• Sólo puede inscribirse para votar en el condado donde vive. No puede estar registrado para votar ni en otro condado, ni en otro estado.
• Debe ser residente del condado donde se registra por por lo menos 30 días antes de las elecciones.
• La Junta de Elecciones recibe solicitudes de boletas para votar por correo (boleta de voto ausente), hasta el 28 de octubre del 2008 a las 5:00 pm.
• Las personas sentenciadas por un delito menor pueden votar aun si están en la cárcel cumpliendo su sentencia. Estas personas pueden solicitar una boleta y votar por correo, a través del voto ausente.
• Si ha sido convicto de un delito mayor puede inscribirse para votar solamente si sus derechos como ciudadano han sido restituidos.

These drives are an initiative of BB&T and they are being organized with the support of Compare Foods, La Noticia, The Spanish-Language Newspaper, the Latin American Coalition, the Latin American Women's Association, La Ley 96.9 FM, 40Raleigh, La Conexion, Telefutura 26 and El Pueblo, Inc. These non profit organizations and businesses got together on this civic cause, because they truly believe it is their responsibility to educate the community on the importance of registering to vote and actually vote in the next elections.

The USA is a country of laws. For any change to take place it has to be supported by a law proposed and approved by Congress Representatives and Senators and then signed by the President. The Latino vote is important as it will allow us to elect the candidates that would support our causes and needs to help our community advance.
According to the Pew Hispanic Center Latinos are the nation's largest and fastest growing minority group, with a population of 46 million. We make up about 15% of the total U.S. population. At the general elections we will comprise about 9% of the eligible electorate nationwide. If past turnout trends persist, we will make up about 6.5% of those who actually turn out to vote next November. It is important that all of us make efforts to increase the number of Latinos voting, to strengthen our group which will mean that the candidates will listen to us more.

Requirements to register to vote:
• Be a citizen of the United States by birth or by naturalization.
• Be 18 years old or older by the date of the elections – November 4, 2008.
• The Federal law requires that you provide your driver’s license number to register to vote. If you do not have a driver’s license then you will have to provide the last four digits of your social security number.
• You can only register in the county and state where you live. You must not be registered or vote in any other county or state.
• Be a resident of the county where you are registering for at least 30 days prior to Election Day.
• If you cannot vote in person you will need and absentee ballot. The Board of Elections receive requests for absentee ballots until October 28, 2008 at 5 p.m.
• If you have been convicted of a felony you temporarily lose your citizenship rights, including your right to vote. In North Carolina you automatically get your rights back after you serve your sentence, including probation and parole. You do not need a special document that says your rights are restored. You just register and vote like any other citizen.
• If you have been convicted of a misdemeanor you never lose your citizenship rights. You can register and vote, even if you are still in jail. Get a registration form and then request an absentee ballot.
