Es natural sentir esperanza y fe en estos días de Navidad en los cuales celebramos el nacimiento de Jesucristo y el nacimiento de un nuevo año. Un nuevo año representa una oportunidad de volver a empezar, de hacer nuevos planes para lograr el cambio deseado en nuestras vidas, en la vida de nuestros familiares y en la vida de los miembros de nuestra comunidad.

Durante estos días nos reunimos a celebrar en familia y con amigos. Pero también buscamos tiempo para rezar por los que no pueden hacerlo por sí mismos, por los que tienen menos que nosotros, por aquellos que están en hospitales, centros de salud mental o cárceles.

En momentos como éstos nos preguntamos ¿Cómo podemos ayudar a los más necesitados? En nuestra comunidad hay múltiples oportunidades que nos permiten compartir nuestro talento, tesoro y tiempo con los necesitados. Por ejemplo, tenemos oportunidades a través de nuestra iglesia, a través de las muchas agencias sin fines de lucro, albergues de personas sin hogar, albergues para mujeres víctimas de violencia doméstica y centros de orientación para adictos a drogas o alcohol. Estos son lugares que siempre requieren de manos amigas para servir a su creciente clientela. Lo único que se necesita es elegir la causa que más se acerque a nuestro corazón.

Para nosotros, una de esas organizaciones es United Way of Central Carolinas. Debido a la controversia relacionada con el paquete de beneficios de su ex CEO Gloria Pace King y a la crisis económica que vive nuestra nación y nuestra ciudad, ha perdido muchos fondos. Hoy más que nunca esta organización necesita recursos financieros y voluntarios para continuar ayudando a nuestros pobres.

Otros deseos para el Año Nuevo:
• Que haya prosperidad para todos. El año 2008 nos presentó a todos muchos retos. Muchas personas perdieron su trabajo, otros perdieron su casa. El año 2009 traerá muchos retos también ya que no será fácil para nuestro país salir de esta recesión económica en la cual está sumergido. Todos seremos afectados por la recesión de una manera u otra, algunos directamente otros indirectamente pero afectados al fin y al cabo. La solución: enfocarse en el trabajo. No flaquear. Mirar siempre hacia adelante, mantener la mirada en la victoria, tener mucha fe y esperanza. Enfocar toda nuestra energía en pensamientos positivos, en un mañana mejor.

• Que haya unión y armonía entre los miembros de nuestra comunidad latina.

• Que todos en la comunidad latina hagamos esfuerzos para integrarnos a la comunidad en general de Charlotte.

• Que demostremos amor hacia este nuestro nuevo país el cual nos ha dado la oportunidad de ser felices.

• Que todos seamos conscientes de la necesidad de sembrar amor, paz y armonía en nuestras familias, empresas y vecindarios. ¿Cómo? A veces una simple sonrisa a nuestro vecino puede ayudar.

• Finalmente, nuestro más ferviente deseo para el 2009, es que se paren las deportaciones que están causando tanto sufrimiento a familias en nuestra comunidad y que se apruebe la Reforma Migratoria Integral, la cual pararía este sufrimiento de una vez por todas. Esto les daría a nuestras familias indocumentadas la esperanza de una vida mejor para ellos y para sus hijos.

2009 New Year's Resolutions

It is natural to feel hope and faith in the days around Christmas when we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and the start of a new year. A new year represents an opportunity to start over, to make new plans to achieve the change we desire in our own lives, in the lives of our families and community members.

During these times we get together to celebrate with family and friends. But we also look for time to pray for those people who cannot pray for themselves, for those who have less than we have, for those who are in hospitals, mental health centers, or prisons.

In moments like these we ask ourselves: how can we help the people who need it most? In our community these are numerous opportunities for us to share our talents, treasures, and time with people who need it.

There are volunteer opportunities through our churches, non-profit organizations, homeless shelters, battered women shelters, alcohol and drug rehabilitation centers, all places in need of helping hands to serve their growing clientele. We just need to choose the cause that is closest to our heart. For us, one of these organizations is United Way of Central Carolinas. Now more than ever, this organization needs everyone's help. Due to the controversy over the benefit package of former CEO Gloria Pace King, as well as the economic crisis that our nation and city are experiencing, the organization has diminished resources. United Way of Central Carolinas needs funds to help the poor and needs volunteers to continue to serve our growing community.

Other wishes for the New Year:
• Prosperity for all. 2008 presented us with many challenges. Many people lost their jobs; others lost their homes. 2009 will also bring many challenges since it won't be easy for our country to come out of the recession we are facing head on. At the end of the day, we will all be affected by the recession in one way or another, whether directly or indirectly. The solution: focus on our work, remain steadfast, always look ahead, maintain faith and hope, focus all of our energy on positive thoughts, on a better tomorrow.

• Unity and harmony between members of our Latino community.

• That all of us in the Latino community make an effort to integrate into the broader Charlotte community.

• That we all show love for our new country, which has given us the opportunity to pursue happiness.

• That we are all conscious of the need to sow the seeds of love, peace and harmony in our families, workplaces/businesses and neighborhoods. How? Sometimes a simple smile to our neighbor can help.

•Finally, our greatest wish for 2009: an end to the deportations that are causing so much suffering for the families in our community, and the approval of Comprehensive Immigration Reform. This would help stop the suffering once and for all and would give our undocumented families hope for a better life for themselves and their children.
